Blessed Objects: anointing oil, blessed salt, and holy water

Anointing_of_fresh_oil

The power to heal and drive off evil has long been attributed to objects that have been blessed. To best understand the principles discussed on this page, first please make yourself familiar with the nature of the Kingdom Conflict.

I provide a comprehensive and biblical explanation for how all this works in my book Peace in Your House: Spiritual Cleansing of Life and Land.

Here’s a summary, however.  The Biblical precedent for this includes

  • In Matthew 9 and 14, sick people who touched Jesus’ clothes  received healing.
  • In Acts 5, people touched by Peter’s shadow received healing.
  • In Acts 19, handkerchiefs and aprons touched by Paul were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
  • In James 5, the writer instructed prayer and anointing with oil for the sick.

Healing properties then and now are attributed to different kinds of oil, in fact. Francis MacNutt’s excellent Deliverance from Evil Spirits contains a chapter on deliverance through “blessed objects.”[ref]See pages 245-252.[/ref]  According to MacNutt, ancient Christians also prayed over salt and water.

SaltBiblically, salt is associated as a preservative which stemmed off corruption and rottenness, bringing “salvation/healing” (Greek: sozo, which means whole healing, wholeness, salvation, etc. Our English translations separate healing from salvation, which actually is foreign to Biblical Christianity. The idea that physical healing is separate from spiritual salvation was introduced  by Gnostics, who decided the physical was “less real” and not as important as the spiritual).

Water is associated with baptism, washing evil away, rebirth, and spiritual warfare. MacNutt suggests that blessed oil is more effective than blessed water, because water evaporates quickly, but since oil stains, care should be taken when sprinkled on cloth.  He suggests salt may be more effective is more effective yet, since it will remain far longer.

How Sound Relates To Healing and Deliverance

Anointing_of_fresh_oilThe sound released by prayer, praise, and worship affect things in the spiritual and the physical realm. Sounds are vibrations that travel through the gaseous matter (air). Sound can also travel through solid matter. Sound affects things.  The Bible records that God actually inhabits the sounds of praise.  Think about that from physical standpoint.

Verbal praise to God – the sound of humans praising God – affects matter in such a way that God is said to inhabit it.

With the creative force of the Holy Spirit that inhabits the sound of prayer to God or praise and worship to God, matter and the spiritual are impacted.

The impact is so significant that if humans did not praise God, the “rocks would cry out” in praise. I suppose that means the vibrations recorded in the crystal structure of rock would continue vibrating and fill the vacuum of praise.

Biblically, this is demonstrated multiple times, but the creation account recorded in Genesis is a good example.  The sound of the voice of God released God’s will and changed matter. It brought order to the chaos. Prayers do the same thing today (on a microscale, of course).

Actually, the vibrations caused by sound can be recorded in matter, and they can affect the air around it in certain conditions. Have you ever listened to a recording of a congregation singing praise and worship to God… and the atmosphere around you changed? God inhabits praise… even recorded praise.

How sound interacts with different kinds of matter may explain the healing power that was stored in the clothes referenced in the verses above, and it may account for why historically salt and oil that have been prayed over have been successfully used in healing and deliverance.

(Edit: NOT) Quantum Vibrations

Perhaps something is going on at the quantum level. The spoken word resonates, creates vibrations on quantum levels, and when the Holy Spirit is behind the spoken word, creative powers (meaning, power to change reality, to shape chaotic systems into order, to affect creation) are released.

(EDIT: This is incorrect. Vibrations, whatever that means exactly, don’t resonate on the quantum level. See how I learned I was wrong, and info debunking these ideas.)

In one of the accounts of creation in the Bible,  the spoken Word released the Holy Spirit, who was hovering over chaotic matter, and organized it according to the Will of God.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good.[ref]Genesis 1:2-4a, ESV[/ref]

This concept is affirmed in John 1, a retelling of the creation account through the lens of the Word became flesh (Jesus).

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.  In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.[ref]John 1:1-5, 14, ESV[/ref]

When a Christian prays over something like oil or salt, perhaps the vibrations of the prayer infused with the power of the Holy Spirit imprint themselves onto the matter at a quantum level. Salt and oil apparently are effective materials in this situation.
This isn’t magic. It’s not mysticisim. There aren’t magic words to say. It’s prayer to God that makes these things work. It’s physics.
The spirit realm is just as real as the physical, and they interact in complicated ways.

Salt and Crystals and the Spirit World

Amethyst

Salt has a crystalline structure. Crystals apparently are able to receive an imprint that affects both the physical and the spirit world.  An example of how crystals can relay information physically is if you’re reading this on a Liquid Crystal Display monitor.  Vibrations are stored on them, and those vibrations can be drawn out in certain situations.

Ghosts of Gettysburg

Ghosts of Gettysburg

A less technological example is when some people see ghosts re-enacting bloody charges on a rocky battlefield. The blood shed and the violence poured out imprint itself on crystals in the rocks, and in certain circumstances, the scenes are replayed, like a film projector casting an image into the air.

Perhaps something even more is going on at the quantum level. Biblically, this is reflected in the vest worn by the High Priest in the Hebrew religion. The author of Exodus 39 states that sardius, topaz, carbuncle, emerald, sapphire, diamond, jacinth, agate, and amethyst were all embedded into this vest. What physical and spiritual properties were imbued in these crystals and rocks?

Different scholars have speculated, and ultimately, it’s not that important, because they have been replaced by a Solid Rock on Whom we stand: Jesus.

Comments

  1. I found a cross that was very interesting at my place of work. When I touched it with my bare hands it had a pulse. My first assumption is it was blessed with holy water. Could this be a correct assumption?

    • That seems reasonable to me. Perhaps it had been anointed with blessed oil, imparting a Kingdom of God resonance to it.

  2. I have used the salt with prayers and it has worked for me. Indeed God empowered the salt to do miracles of delivering His children from dark or black powers! I love you God, and God loves me!!
    Thank you.

    • Hi Banura can you please share with me how to use salt with prayers. I use water in oil.I speak scriptures into it.I ask God to bless it.I have been struggling a lot spiritually. Can you please share? Thank you

    • It so true anointing oil or salt have use and when you pray by the blood of Jesus Christ there is deliverance.l thank God for giving us guidance.God bless who wrote the article it ways such a good explanation

  3. thanks very much.salt is a very good in prayers.can you share scripturer prayers with salt so that we can learn with colleages

    • The steps of blessing salt in a house cleansing are similar to the oil:

      1. Take a bowl of salt.

      2. Bless it. Here’s an ancient prayer to bless salt, according to MacNutt:

God’s creature, salt, I cast out the demon from you by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God, by God who ordered you to be thrown into the water-springs by Eliseus to heal it of its barrenness. May you be purified salt, a means of health for those who believe, a medicine for body and should and for all who make use of you. May all evil fancies of the would fiend, his malice and cunning, be driven afar from the place where you are sprinkled. And let every unclean spirit be repulsed by Him who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen.

Almighty, everlasting God, we humbly appeal to your mercy and goodness to graciously bless this creature, salt, which you have given for mankind’s use. May all who use it find it in a remedy for body and mind. And may everything that it touches or sprinkles by freed from uncleanness and any influence of the evil spirits through Christ out Lord, Amen.[1]

      3. Sprinkle it in the corners of your room, in the closets, and anywhere else that you want to dedicate to the Kingdom of God. Take care in knowing that sprinkling too much salt, blessed or not, on the yard or in plants may kill them. Our aim is to purify our homes and land from spiritual forces, not kill anything. I often release the Kingdom of God when I do this, in Jesus name.

      • Where in the Bible does it teach us to sprinkle salt and say a prayer to cleanse especially when The name of Jesus is all we need?

        • Exod. 30:30-36. Lev. 2:13. Num. 18:19. 2 Kings 2:18-22. 2 Chron 13:5. Ezek. 43:24. Salt is a symbol of the covenant and holiness.

In addition, we now know it resonates with the sounds imparted into it, including prayers. After all… what is a prayer, but sound waves causing air to vibrate. Some substances, like salt, continue the vibrations long after, thus signaling to dark spirits that this is God’s territory.

        • Amen Sac. I was trying to find that in the bible as well. Witches use these things in their works. The bible says that my children perish from a lack of wisdom. So many of our people a gullible to the enemy.

          • Did you not see the scriptures posted above? These things ARE in the Bible.

And the Bible doesn’t say “my children perish from lack of wisdom.” It says God’s people perish for lack of knowledge. Incidentally, the context for that verse has nothing to do with this context, but the knowledge of God comes from hearing God and looking up the scriptures.

          • So, you must also believe that the 11 Apostles were all practicing witchcraft when they cast lots?! Or that Apostle Paul was practicing necromancy when he resurrected a man from the dead?! Or that Prophet Moses was practicing magic when he turned a stick into a snake just like Pharaoh’s magicians?! Or that Prophet Isaiah was practicing witchcraft when he had Hezekiah’s servants make a potion from figs to heal Hezekiah?!

  4. Thank you for this article Doug,

I think I will try this blessing of salt in my room and the entire house as well. I usually pray on olive oil and sprinkle dots on my windows, cupboards, bed head etc. This article sheds light on how important it is to watch what’s going on in your house. In light of this article, my mother wants to keep tabs on my 16-year-old sister with special needs since she’s at the age where she’s boy and phone crazy. She thought that maybe Kate and I could switch rooms, for my room has a busted handle and can’t lock which would be perfect for moms plan. I quickly agreed and had no problems with it. Later the Holy Spirit spoke to me audibly about it, telling me I should reconsider switching rooms. “Kate won’t know the level of spiritual warfare that is necessary to be in that room!” He said. Even now in my mind I’m being warned its a terrible idea.

I’ve never thought the Holy Spirit saw me being in that particular room as important. Its the first bedroom as you come up the stairs and incidentally I’m the first born! I usually pray and sing to Elohim in there every morning. This salt cleansing is a good idea because as I’ve admitted in other articles I’ve heard doors and windows opening in the house where there are no doors or windows. After two occasions of this, incidentally after listening to Russ Dizar I realized it was around Beltane (witch holiday) and the last solstice a few weeks ago. NOW the blanks are filling in and I haven’t really heard preternatural doors open since.

None of my family are practicing witchcraft and our house was built by us 15 years ago, I can’t understand why these things are happening! We heard there was an ancient abandoned cemetery a 1/4 mile from my area but there is no trace of it at all and there are homes where it was, our house is far from there. My younger siblings have moved out and its only mystified me, with Yeshua Hamashiach’s help that is hearing these things.

But I’ll say one thing, bitter crying and sadness is something God doesn’t want from us anymore. The last time I was having a good bawl in the bathroom the Holy Spirit said to me quietly, slowly and softly “so what is your life expectancy crying in the night like this?” He warned me a long time before that if I didn’t stop that type of weeping I was going to develop a physical problem with my heart. “God gives His beloved sleep” its said in Psalm 127. Other times when I was downstairs crying again I heard a voice say “You are under the protection of Archangel Uriel’s hosts!” I asked Ruach Ha-kodesh if He had an angel named Uriel and I think He said yes, although I still have my doubts.

Otherwise, I think obeying the Lord with restful sleep, the blessed salt, oil and holy water try Psalm 91, learn it and get it into your being. Its helped me a lot and its a very good WARFARE Psalm, believe me. As for me, I’m learning to fight and am in need of nothing now but a new career (don’t want any more media work). There is finally a guy I think I like and may want to settle down with (still praying about that) and I’m doing so, so much better than the frightened, desperate woman searching the internet to find out what in Jesus name was going on in her life. All of these things I didn’t learn in church could have lead to my unraveling or disaster. And I was going to church when these violent attacks began. If it wasn’t for Ruach Ha-kodesh I would be dead meat. Thank you Jesus Christ!

  5. This early morning, still very dark outside, uncertain weather i have a gift or curse. Usally i tune out things although at times i get a little freaked out when i sense things that are either humanly manifested or demonic influence. Instead of a little Christ power that repels from just the sound if his spoken name.”Jesus” thought i would bless some salt and water combined and sprinkel it around the house when i came across this web site and what a delight filled of wisdombi received. Perhaps even god spirt lead as i found much comfort in confirming knoledge i received. Thank each of you for sharing be blessed and bless others.

  6. Personally I sprinkle the salt around my entry ways and put it in between my mattress. I ask God to expel anything not from Him, and to fill it with His Holy Spirit and angels of war.

  7. This is wonderful, i am just on the edge of undertaking this exercise at 12midnite today and my research has led me to this info. God bless you.
i willlike to receive some of writings. [email protected]

  8. Hello please believe that God is not the author of confusion.
If you saw a cross and touched it does not mean that it blessed.
Be aware that we live in a world that is ruled by our enemy satan.
He is a decieved and he will do so in order to get his plan done through what ever means possible, and yes that means the cross.
He has the ability to use what ever object, person, animal or what ever as long as the person not have excepted Jesus as his or her Lord and Savior and have the Holy Spirit, then whom ever can be easily decieved by the devil.
So what I would do is get some anointed water that you know that has been blessed by a real man of God and sprinkle it all over that cross.
I wished that I was with you and that way I can tell you if it’s anointed or not.
In your work place is there a lot of negative things going on there or is there a piece in the place.
Depending on who brought the cross there, it could also be that whom ever bought it there meant to do harm not good but if you don’t have the Holy Spirit then you will never know and by that cross being there, it could make everything at a stand still so it just depends.
But get the Holy water and spray it all over the cross and say a prayer if it stop beating then it was not of God but of the enemy.
You can call me and we can talk more my name is Marilyn Cox my number is 972-607-0153 GOD BLESS

  9. A preacher friend of mine told me salt was used by Christians before the devil, that the devil loved coping and calling what’s Gods his. This was his response after I shamefully admitted I put up the salt line. I put it up after being harassed by a demon during a low point with God. He told me Jesus was the salt of the earth. I put it up all the while praying it would work, It did. The thing come back and, I screamed at it from my front porch. It hollewed and screeched, it made the hairs on my arms stand on end.

  10. use salt to take bath also before any job interview, it increases favor and attractions,Elisha blessed salt to change the taste of water that was very bad and also land that was barren to fruitfulness , you can use salt to chase any negative spirit which is not of God,let me say this things are all of faith, you can also use earth as our lord Jesus the saviour of mankind did to heal the blind. If you think salt is fetish why not try another things it is of faith and accepted if post it we can also learn but i have use salt immediately i so great and fast change, Jesus is lord!!!

  11. Thank you for that Prayer, I have spirits on my shoulders breathing down my ears day/night I have had them for 5 years now. Roman Catholic Church Unable to help me.I have visited Pastors, Priests, Canon. I have tried over the years to get them remove to no avail. How should I apply the salt on me. blessings thank you so much for sharing this information. I was told about you from a lady in US.

  12. Doug, I THINK you are correct about change in chemical properties because when Lord Jesus the Christ changed water into wine, that was obviously a change in chemical proprieties.

  13. Hi, I too am going through major evil spiritual attacks and have used oil but not salt. They even inflict pain on me. I can’t sleep. It’s a non stop battle at the moment. Any help is much appreciated. The Lord bless you all in Jesus Christ name amen 🙏🏻 ❤️

  14. sprinkle sea salt around your home. sprinkle salts on every door and window sills. pray while doing so. also what helps alot is vinegar, salt and water in a glass cup or bowl and leave it in your living room after doing the salt cleansing . hold the vinegar, water and salt by the front of your front door and pray hard to ask god or whoerver your higher power is to cleanse, protect, heal, bless, purify your home with this water. leave it over night and when you dump it out in the sink the next day say a thankful prayer. i noticed that helped big time

  15. SALT IS ONE OF THE WEAPONS AND SPIRITUAL KEYS OF NATURE. IT’S ONE OF THE MYSTERIES OF GOD TO HELP MAN LIVE SECURED FROM BLACK POWERS

  16. Please email me a chapter from your book on this topic. I would also want to know more about candles and uses if that is biblical. Thank You and God Bless

  17. I actually don’t have anything at all in the book on candles. I do mention oil lamps, and different kinds of oil will produce different colors of fire, but that’s in the context of worship, and the most important part of worship is your heart position. The quote was:

“Worship of God in ancient Israel included singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, and responsive readings. They created an atmosphere that facilitated a physical encounter with God, including worshiping in incense-filled spaces lit with multi-colored oil-burning lamps.” The citation is – David Seal, “Incense, Critical Issues”, Lexham Bible Dictionary. See also Dennis Cole, “Lamps, Lighting, Lampstand” in Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, edited by Chad Brand, et al., (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2003).

There’s a technology issue going on – from before the biblical era until the last century or so, candles and oil lamps were the only source of light after dark. This is still true in parts of the world.

The ancient Israelites used these kinds of lights around the Tabernacle and later the Temple to indicate that God was “home”, so to speak. Having God’s presence in their midst was important. They thought of God as “fire”, and later Jesus called himself the Light of the World. So as God’s present temple, the Light or Fire is in us. These are shades of metaphor of course in the physical, but probably more real than we suppose in the spiritual.

So anyway, I don’t think candles or other kinds of light are matter one way or the other.

  18. Adding salt into water and sprinkle it in my compound, please does it still work effectively? Unlike the blessed salt and water. Please I need an answer please

  19. I would think if you pray over the salt as you create the compound, it’d be just as effective when sprinkling it.

  20. Hello Jennifer,

To begin with, there is no special power of God in the cloth any more than there was in the oil in which the ancients of Israel were anointed. Neither Salt with prayers. It was the Spirit of God that makes us holy, and I think explains why the Spirit’s name is the Holy Spirit; He lives to make us holy, because there is none good but God (Mark 10:18; Rom 3:10-12), but what about prayer cloths? These are still being used today in many parts of the world.

They practice this from a passage they read in the Bible where it says, “And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them” (Acts 19:11-12)

It says “God was doing extraordinary miracles” but it was “by the hands of Paul” and not Paul himself, so even though they “carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them” (Acts 5:15), it was God’s power and not theirs, and God’s power is certainly not in oil or in cloth, neither in salt.

When we begin to focus on things rather than a relationship with God, these things may become empty rituals that mean nothing to God, and I’m sure it’s not pleasing to Him. Jesus said we must worship God in both spirit and in truth (John 4:24). If you don’t have both the Holy Spirit and the truth, which is found in the Word of God, you cannot have true worship that is acceptable to God, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve been anointed with oil or you’re lying in a pile of prayer cloths or a bowl of salt.

Jesus is straight and clear in the following verse John 15:5- I am the vine, you are the branches: He that stays in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. SO JESUS CHRIST IS THE REAL DEAL.

Again, (I John 1:9). Through the blood, God will cleanse every sin from those coming to Him. And the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin (I John 1:7). Just as the blood of Jesus can cleanse people of all sin, it can cleanse people of all sicknesses, too. We find that healing is part of the two-fold atonement: With his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). With His blood stripes we are healed. Had there been no blood in those stripes, we would not have healing; but divine blood was there.

When God sees you using the blood, you have deliverance. When He sees you using the blood for your healing, the healing is yours. God has provided the blood for more than salvation of your soul; God wants you to use it for your healing also. Accept the fact that the blood can cleanse you from sickness as well as sin. Everyone can qualify, can meet the conditions the Word sets forth.

  21. This morning I awoke and heard he is pouring out oil. I found you website. Thank you Lord Jesus. I praise your holy name.
