Three Types of Gifts from the Holy Spirit

The indwelling Holy Spirit is a vital component of the Christian faith, and one of the most significant ways He impacts the lives of believers is through the gifts He bestows upon them. These gifts are not mere talents or abilities but supernatural endowments that enable believers to carry out God’s work and build up the body of Christ. Let’s explore at a high level some of the gifts of the Holy Spirit described in 1 Corinthians 12 and how they can enhance our lives and the lives of others.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit can be divided into three categories: gifts of revelation, gifts of power, and gifts of communication.

A gift of revelation is when something you can’t know through natural senses is revealed to you by the Holy Spirit. Three examples are in 1 Corinthians 12. The gifts of revelation include the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, and the discerning of spirits. These gifts enable believers to understand and interpret divine truth and discern the workings of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

The word of wisdom is the ability to understand God’s will and apply it to a particular situation. It allows believers to make sound decisions based on divine insight and not mere human understanding. The word of knowledge is the ability to grasp a truth that is not readily apparent through human reasoning or observation. It further enables believers to understand God’s word more deeply and communicate it effectively to others. The discerning of spirits is the ability to distinguish between the influences of the Holy Spirit and other spiritual forces. It helps believers to avoid deception and discern the true nature of spiritual phenomena.

A gift of power is when some supernatural ability to shape the physical world is released. The gifts of power in 1 Corinthians 12 include faith, miracles, and healing. These gifts empower believers to carry out God’s work with supernatural power and effectiveness. Faith is the ability to trust God fully and confidently. It allows believers to move mountains and accomplish the seemingly impossible. Miracles are supernatural interventions that defy natural laws and demonstrate God’s power. Healing is the restoration of health and wholeness through divine intervention. These gifts not only bless the recipient but also serve as a witness to others of God’s power and love.

The gifts of communication include prophecy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. These gifts enable believers to communicate God’s message in ways that are understandable and impactful. Prophecy is the ability to speak forth God’s word with power and authority. It edifies, exhorts, and comforts believers and serves as a witness to unbelievers. Tongues are languages spoken by the Holy Spirit through believers. They are often used in prayer and in worship to build the person up and can be a sign to unbelievers that the promised Age to Come is here. The interpretation of tongues is the ability to understand and interpret what the Holy Spirit is saying through tongues. It allows believers to receive and communicate God’s message more effectively.

In conclusion, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are essential to the spiritual lives of believers and the wider Body of Christ. They enable us to understand God’s will, carry out His work with power, and communicate His message effectively. As we seek to grow in our relationship with God, we should ask Him to fill us with His Spirit and empower us with these gifts. With them, we can be effective witnesses for Christ and make a lasting impact on the world around us.
